Three wells supplying city water have problems
Three of the five Bastrop water wells that supply the City of Bastrop are not functioning properly, officials said during a special meeting last week. But according to experts, the situation does not affect public health.
One well in Fisherman’s Park has already been shut down and two of the other wells, north of the park, are pumping at much lower gallons-per-minute levels than normal, officials said at the May 10 meeting.
James Bene, a hydrologist with R.W. Harden & Associates of Austin, said inspections show some form of iron-feasting bacteria are probably clogging the aquifer in an area close to one well.
He said that the bacteria is not E. coli, adding that water samples taken came back negative for that potentially deadly bacteria.
The water supply slowdown isn’t an emergency yet, city officials said. However, City Manager Mike Talbot said he is looking to more strictly enforce the city’s water restrictions.
Talbot said the city will try chemically cleaning the well areas at a cost of $42,000.
